Historical:

When the war began, zeppelins loomed large in the public consciousness. Every one new that the German Empire possessed superior airship technology and only a few years prior to the war, a novel in which the city of New York was destroyed by zeppelins had been widely published. At the beginning of the war, the Germany was not immediately prepared to use zeppelins for warfare, thinking as every one did that the war would be quite brief. Never the less the fear among the public in Britain and France was intense enough that there were many false sightings of zeppelins that first year. Though once the Zeppelins did come, the psychological effect of these behemoth aircraft approaching with the drone of their engines, shortly accompanied by the booming of their bombs was quite powerful.
